This year marks our 12th year owning Riverkeep Lodge. We have made it our mission to make your stay with us the best it can be. We continue to make improvements to our operation every year to ensure your stay with us is unforgettable. We are truly a family owned and operated lodge. My wife Cathy and our kids, Stephen and Lydia, are at the lodge with me to help run the day to day operations. They help me with the cooking, cleaning, and anything else necessary to meet your every need.

Our guest’s safety is of utmost importance to us. We have replaced the boardwalk between all the buildings in addition to building new stairs, decks and railings to make getting around the Lodge safe and easy. A new dock system will be put in place this year to make getting in/out of the boats easier and also make it easier to load and unload the float plane when it arrives each week.

The fishing season was a very good one. The guests caught a lot of large landlocked salmon, many lake trout and lots of whitefish all in the river. The brook trout fishing was also very good this season; they were taking dry flies as well as streamer patterns. It was great to see that the fish were heavy and healthy. That is setting us up for another great year of fishing. To catch all five species of fish in the river is a great thing, there is always something to fish for if the brook trout are down, the salmon are biting or the lake trout are feeding. The whitefish are always feeding in the foam lines. They can get up to 7 lbs and can be a huge challenge to get in the net, they have soft mouths so it can be very difficult to catch them. The pike are always willing to smash a fly on the surface or crush a subsurface pattern. A ton of fun on a fly rod! Riverkeep Lodge has a diverse fishery that I believe only one other lodge in Labrador can also claim to offer. In addition, all five species can be caught right out in front of the lodge.

The hatches were off just a bit last season, but still enough to keep the fish looking up. The caddis hatches were pretty good in July but the drakes were also good. The early salmon fly hatch was very good. The hatches of golden stone flies and blue winged olives were right on track. I find it difficult sometimes to explain the hatches. Sometimes there is a mixture of all these bugs coming off at the same time; it is something that must be seen to believe. Put all the fishing, hatches and the untouched scenery of Labrador together and you have an experience you won’t soon forget. A trip to Riverkeep Lodge will have you in complete relaxation; it is our mission to make sure this happens.

Now that the holidays are over and the New Year is underway, it is time to start planning your trip to Riverkeep Lodge. We measure fish in pounds, not inches. So come join the Murray family at our home away from home this summer. All it takes is for you to pick up the phone or send us an email, it is that simple. We will have everything ready on our end…..all we need now is you!

Hope to hear from you soon. Remember, take a kid fishing, they will never forget it and neither will you!

Take care,
Steve, Cathy, Stephen and Lydia
